Dr. Donna Tuman and Dr. SeungYeon Lee are collaborating with LIU and St. John’s University colleagues to study if preschoolers’ emergent literacy programs in rural Ugandan libraries impact school readiness. After storytelling/story-acting activities were conducted with 121 children, twice a week, over a 6month period, post-intervention testing revealed noted improvement. Literacy-based activity sessions included free drawing time, which yielded over 6,000 children’s drawings during the six-month period. The drawings are now being closely studied and analyzed to determine what characteristics of children’s artistic development in drawing advanced as an outcome of literacy intervention.
