Business of the Creative Panel Discussion

We are artists, full of passion for our work, but needing guidance and examples of how to channel that passion into viable professional pathways. At LIU Post Art we are connecting young artists to mentors who have navigated the path to self-supporting creative careers. The Business of the Creative Speaker Panel March 20, 2019 features:

Susan Boxer Kappel, is an artist and clinical art psychotherapist. She has a private practice and is a clinical supervisor at Hofstra University’s Counseling Mental Health Professions Clinic.  She is the 50th Anniversary conference chair for the for the American Art Therapy Association and the former president of the New York Art Therapy Association. She has worked with a variety of populations, created the community after tragedy art therapy resilience initiative and given lectures across the nation on various topics in Art Therapy.

Louise P. Sloane, represented by Spannerman Modern, Amy Simon Fine Art, and and Sideshow Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Louise P. Sloane has been exhibiting her minimalist abstract color paintings nationally since 1991. Her career encompasses brick and mortar gallery representation to the increasingly important forum of art fairs.

Foundations: Drawing Class Prepares For Midterm

This past week our drawing students in Foundations have been working hard for the upcoming midterm. Students have yet again impressed our Fine Art professors by collaborating each of their drawings into an “Art Wall”.

The Art Wall is comprised of 33-35 student works of still lives and anatomical studies. This collection of work filled a 8’x24′ wall space within our sculpture building. The talents of these freshman students is absolutely incredible.

Foundation Students Use Digital Technology to Study Space

Students in Studio Foundation use 3D Modeling and 3D Printing to explore light, form and scale.  They learned 3D modeling to create forms that juxtapose mass and volume that were printed on a small scale.  That form was then “sliced” digitally and output to shapes that were cut and assembled by hand and compared with the small scale version to study light and the impact of a shift in scale scale on form These investigations are extensions of studies of light, space, and form in paper.

Art Education Research: Children’s Drawing’s From Uganda

Dr. Donna Tuman and Dr. SeungYeon Lee are collaborating with LIU and St. John’s University colleagues to study if preschoolers’ emergent literacy programs in rural Ugandan libraries impact school readiness. After storytelling/story-acting activities were conducted with 121 children, twice a week, over a 6month period, post-intervention testing revealed noted improvement. Literacy-based activity sessions included free drawing time, which yielded over 6,000 children’s drawings during the six-month period. The drawings are now being closely studied and analyzed to determine what characteristics of children’s artistic development in drawing advanced as an outcome of literacy intervention.

Fabrication Technologies Moving Into The Realm Of The Fine Arts Program

 

The art department sculpture building is transitioning studios to accommodate new technologies for a MakerSpace fabrication center. The sculpture curriculum now includes investigations in 3D design with 3D printing and plans to expand fabrication options with laser cutting and scanning technologies. Plans for the future include a new MakeSpace studio equipped with a broad selection of electronic and hands on media to create, engineer, and design contemporary sculptural form.

New Program In Museum Studies Scheduled To Launch In Fall 2017

In response to nation wide interest in cultural studies and museum leaning, the LIU Post art history program has recently established to New York State degree programs. Both the five-year BA/MA and a stand alone MA in museum studies will have two distinct tracks, one for museum education the other for curatorial studies. The programs are designed with laboratory style learning in which over one-third of contact time takes place within a museum; As well as internships in regional museums. The new Steinberg Museum at LIU post will be relocated and redesigned in the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library on campus to include over 500sqft of the LIU Collections visual storage display which will be accessible glass units presenting the colleges resources for hands-on college learning. This museum opening is scheduled to coincide with the launch of the museum studies program.

Come see the MFA Thesis Show titled “Nexus 0f 12” which will be featuring 12 graduating MFA students here at LIU Post . This is LIU’s most interesting and will rounded exhibitions, featuring local and international artists. Works shown range in all types of techniques, styles, and cultural traditions in the fields of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and animation.

This show features artists, Chris Ann Ambery, Sohee Conover, Nickolas Frizalone, Carrie-Anne Gonzalez, Yuheng Hou, Candice Licalzi, Juan Lopez, Suzi Pastorelli, Ashley Schriefer, Chelsea Soldner, Yuan Yin, and Tingting Zhang.
