Sculpture students in Prof. Winn Rea’s class show off casting skills learned from visiting artists Leon Reid IV and Ryan Seslow.

Artistic collaboration begins here!  Visiting artists Leon Reid IV and Ryan Seslow visited Prof. Winn Rea’s beginning and advanced sculpture classes to demonstrate latex mold making and Rockite casting.  At the artists’ direction students brought in obsolete technologies such as old flip-phones, computer hard drives, VHS tapes, calculators and TV remote controls from which they learned to make molds and casts.  Students got really excited to see the first concrete cast results from their molds.

Reid and Seslow have invited the students to become collaborators by contributung as many multiple casts as they would like to their upcoming public art project, “Technophemera,” that will be installed in conjunction with a graffiti show Seslow is curating in January at the Steinberg Museum of Art in Hillwood Commons.   More process photos from latex mold making and Rockite casting.

BEFORE I DIE………FEATURED IN HILLWOOD STUDENT ART GALLERY, OCTOBER 2013

Before I die… It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what really matters to you. Before I Die is a global public art project that invites people to reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in public space. Originally created by artist Candy Chang on an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans after she lost someone she loved, this project is about remembering what is important to you. It’s about getting to know the people around you in new and enlightening ways. It’s about creating public spaces that help us see we are not alone as we try to lead personally meaningful lives. More than 100 walls have been created in over 10 languages and in over 30 countries, including Kazakhstan, Argentina, Korea, Italy, Australia, Germany, and South Africa. You are invited to add your response to Before I Die I want to……… on the black gallery wall. Chalk is provided.
