Foundations: Drawing Class Prepares For Midterm

This past week our drawing students in Foundations have been working hard for the upcoming midterm. Students have yet again impressed our Fine Art professors by collaborating each of their drawings into an “Art Wall”.

The Art Wall is comprised of 33-35 student works of still lives and anatomical studies. This collection of work filled a 8’x24′ wall space within our sculpture building. The talents of these freshman students is absolutely incredible.

When fotofoto gallery had an open call for the show “Your Best Shot”, photography students at Post were encouraged to submit work by their professor Thom O’Connor and that is what Nicole DiGiovanni did.

“I grew up in Long Island and have always enjoyed going to fotofoto gallery and I used to dream that I’d have an opportunity to have my artwork displayed in their gallery. I was so excited when Thom made the announcement and I knew I would finally have the chance to have my photographs on display in one of my favorite photo galleries!”

Nicole submitted 3 horse portraits and 1 self-portrait, which are all included in the show.

“I am extremely passionate about the horses and have had the chance to work close with them while being on the LIU Post Equestrian Team. Horses are one of my favorite subjects to photograph; there is something so magical, beautiful, and magnificent about horses. Horses truly are a work of art and I find so much pleasure in being able to capture their beauty with my camera. Horses and photography are two of my greatest passions.”

Studying Photography at LIU Post, Nicole explains that she has tried a few different artistic mediums although photography is her favorite way to express herself and the world around her.

“My favorite subjects to shoot are horses, landscapes and portraits. I act as if my camera is my “third eye” and never go anywhere without my camera. I do not limit myself to shooting one subject and always keep an open mind to whatever my camera and I may see. I enjoying being out in nature with my camera but there’s nothing like being in the studio. Photography has been my creative outlet since elementary school. Photography is my favorite art form; it allows the viewer to be able to interpret the world through images created by the photographer. I find it most interesting to understand the exact moment photographer’s capture and why they are willing to share that image with a viewer.”

“Your Best Shot” is up February 27 – March 28, 2015.
Artist reception is on Saturday, March 28, 5 – 7 PM.
It is a free event and all are welcome!

Susan Kelly at the Starving Artist Café

Fine art senior Susan Kelly is currently having her art displayed in the Starving Artist Cafe’s Gallery, Franklin Square, NY.

About a year ago, Susan went by the Starving Artist Café for lunch and happened to notice the gallery space near the entrance. “I asked the owner who was exhibiting and how I could get my own exhibit” she explains. “He then pulled out a small notebook and took down my information, phone number and what kind of work I do.”
After a while, Susan started to forget about it. But one day the owner called her saying that the person who was supposed to exhibit backed out and that she was next. “So I packed out my car and was hanging the next day.”

At the moment, Susan is preparing for her senior show at LIU Post in the Hillwood Student Art League gallery. The reception of her thesis will be on March 18th.

Regarding the show at the Starving Artist Café, she was never really worried about what to show since she is constantly creating new works. “I did not have a specific theme for the show. I was thinking of this show almost as a preview for myself for what my senior show would look like. I got to see what my work looks like hanging all together and how much room it takes up. Now I have time to work on what I think my work needs as a whole.”

The show at the Starving Artist Café will be up until Sunday, February 15th and the reception will be tomorrow Thursday, February 12th, starting at 5 PM. All are welcome!
